Short Bio:

Dr. Ahmed Abdala joined the Chemical Engineering Program, Texas A&M at Qatar, as Associate Professor in Spetember 2017. Prior to joining TAMUQ he was Senior Scientist at Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) and Associate Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Doha Qatar. Dr. Abdala received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Petroleum Refining Engineering from Suez Canal University in Egypt and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University. After completeing his Ph.D., he joined Princeton University as Research Associate (2003-2004) before returning to his home country, Egypt, as Assistant Professor at Suez Canal University (2004-2006). In 2006, he joined the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi as Assistant Professor and was then promoted to Associate Professor (2011) and served as the Deputy Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department (2012-20014).

Abdala research focuses on development of advanced materials for energy and environmental applications based on polymers and carbon nanomaterials including polymer nanocomposites, functionalized graphene materials, polymeric membranes for gas separation and water treatment, and nanohybirds of metal oxides and 2D carbon materials. In addition to materials development, applications of polymers and surfactants in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is another area of his research. He published 45 peer-reviewed articles that received over 8900 citations and he is granted 7 US patents.

Abdala is the recipient of “Qatar Excellence in Innovation” Award for Citation Impact Classified by Web of Science from Thomson Reuters, October, 2016; “Science Lantern Faculty Award” from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), 2013 and 2014; “Best Paper Award (First Prize) from Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science, Kuwait, 2011; and “Nancy G. Pollack Thesis and Dissertation Award” for the best Ph.D. thesis in College of Engineering from North Carolina State University, 2003.
